‘Sweet Betsy’ II(-/-)
Parentage unknown R: unknown (pre 1980), N: D. Dale (1990), I: Parkland Perennials (1994), REG: D. Dale (1993) Inside cream suffused with pink, throat cream; outside cream overlaid with pink, midribs deep pink; spots very few, maroon, randomly distributed on basal part of each tepal; nectaries cream; pollen golden. Fls 90 mm wide; tepals 37 × 20 mm, margins smooth, tips slightly recurved. Lvs whorled, 146 × 55 mm, mid green. Stems 1.7 m, appearing plum-coloured especially when grown in more of a shaded area, with 18-24 fls. Early July.
The fragrance is as sweet as can be and I am sure that had a lot to do with the naming of the stunning one-of-a-kind ‘Betsy’ known as ‘Sweet Betsy’—

I like to plant my martagons deeper so that they emerge later hoping to dodge the last season spring frost dates.
When planting, give it’s first drenching of a gallon of nice warm water for that first drink in the fall you will be very happy that you did. Trust me. I have now hot and cold water faucets that are on each cardinal direction of the headquarters at Hartle-Gilman Gardens just so I can water extremely warm drinks on those chilly fall planting dates.
