Description
L. x dalhansonii ‘Brocade’ cv. (Selection from Backhouse Hybrids) R:&N: Backhouse, before 1923. Wallace cat.: 3 (1923). Orange-yellow, suffused rosy pink, spotted chocolate. Stems 1.5m. June. Arose as a sport. Complex lineage .. The last time this was offered was three seasons ago. I have now a few more available. This is a hard martagon to find here in the states.
I find this martagon to be intriguing as the details seem to change with the color and how it reflects with the spectrum of light waves. Sometimes, I will see more yellow and other times it’s more rosy-pink. That is because of the unique flower structure. There are undertones of peachy-pink, mellow-yellow ( almost buttery ) along with dappling hues of tangerine. Standing closer you will get a fragrance of long ago that echoed in the gardens during the magnificent roaring 20’s. The shade or the sun rays will accentuate the spectrum of color we will actually be able to see. The inflorescence is borne on graceful reflexed stems.
A very very old martagon, that is not so easily found. By golly—– over 100 years and still can only be found randomly in one’s garden.
This year I have about 10 of these, maybe more—
4-5 feet tall clumps when established
full to part sun-rays
Plant 5-6 inches deep water in well. Just do not provide deep shade nor continuous wet moist enviroments. They love being under a tree with dappled shade or interspersed with hosta perennial hybrids.
